Move Your Body And the Words Will Follow

I will often say to students in my improv classes and workshops who are stuck in their heads, “Move your body and the words will follow.”

As simple as it sounds, when they move their body, most of the time they end up saying something that surprises them. They go from being stuck to brilliance.

All it takes is a little faith.

How we do our life is how we do our art. I think about how stuck I can be when I am in a safe routine, and left up to my own devices, I would never leave my own house.

For me, getting on a plane and going on vacation for a week is the equivalent to moving my body on stage. For me, vacations are hard because I don't know how to relax and have fun, so unlike most people, I don't look forward to them. Instead, I dread them.

Last month, Lauren, Betsy and I went to Hilton Head, NC. We rode bikes, swam at the pool, played at the beach.

I had fun -- so much so, that on the last day, instead of looking forward to going home, I was sad.

All because I moved my body. And guess what? I end up surprising myself and Lauren and Betsy, too.
