Make Improv As Easy As Having a Conversation
When done right, improvisation can be as easy as having a conversation. But when things aren't working, we panic and think being "faster" and "funnier" is the solution. The opposite is true. Slow improv almost always leads to more satisfying and funny scenes. And the best part is you don't have to work so damn hard.
What is Slow Improv?
Slow improv, or "slowprov," is a more grounded, relationship-based style of improvisation. The scenes are usually like slices of life, such as two jealous high school kids getting ready for prom or a couple finding out they are pregnant. No crazy premises. No wacky characters. Just real people in real-Life situations.
Why Slow Improv?
Everyone in improv talks about the game in the scene. They like to over complicate it. Slow improv helps you find "the game" faster because "the game" can be as simple as heightenting your character's behavior or emotion. If you are improvising a scene where you are pretending you are driving in the car with four kids in the back seat and the mom says from the front seat, "Stop touching your Brother's hand. He has asked you nicely to stop." That is a game. It's as basic as it gets, but all you have to do is increase "bothering" your brother and now everyone in the scene has something to react to. Slow Improv teaches you to be patient and trust that the game will present itself to you, and when you recognize it, you will naturally know what to do.
What You Will Learn in This Workshop
- How to cure the #1 problem in improv today: talking over every single line in a scene. Instead, you will be taught to improvise 1 or 2 lines at a time. Once you start doing this, your improv will instantly go to a whole new level.
- How to check in with your partner at the top of the scene to automatically create comedic tension, not conflict, to make improvising easier.
- The importance of playing it real before trying to be funny, making your improv even funnier.
